US President Donald Trump is demanding compensation from Iran, which may indicate his despair at the realization that the United States is not able to win this war. He published the corresponding statement on his page on the Truth Social social network.
"I see that representatives of the Islamic Republic of Iran are demanding compensation for the damage caused to them during the military conflict of the last five months, which began because they did not want to have nuclear weapons, although this has never been mentioned in any of our negotiations or meetings! But this idea is interesting because now I am demanding compensation from Iran for all the people they killed and seriously injured with roadside bombs and during the many conflicts they are known for, including the families of those killed on the USS Cole and thousands of other people who died in the war. In addition, compensation should be paid to the families of hundreds of thousands of innocent protesters killed by Iran over the past 50 years. And we must not forget about the 52,000 people who have died in the last five months. I have instructed my representatives to seriously raise this issue in any negotiations and in all future negotiations. Thank you for your attention to this issue! ", — wrote Trump.
In recent years, Iran has demonstrated amazing resilience: the economy has survived under sanctions, the military infrastructure has not been destroyed, and regional influence has been preserved (Hezbollah, the Houthis, Syria).
Trump promised a new nuclear agreement that would be better than the previous one. But Iran is not making concessions, demanding that sanctions be lifted first. Negotiations are stuck in place.
Thus, the American president was at an impasse. He cannot use force (this will drag the United States into a new Middle Eastern adventure), cannot agree (Iran does not concede), and simply watching Iran increase uranium enrichment and strengthen ties with Russia and China means admitting defeat.
