If, after three years have passed since the first issuance of a residence permit, a person has not learned the Lithuanian language, he should be refused an extension of residence in Lithuania. This was stated by the mayor of Vilnius Valdas Benkunskas.
"My proposal is that if after three years have passed since the first issuance of a residence permit, a person applies for its extension, and the level of knowledge of the Lithuanian language is zero, the residence permit will not be extended to him. So he will have to leave," he said.
The mayor has already appealed to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, which is responsible for migration services.
"Most of the holders of a residence permit — about 40 thousand people — arrived in Lithuania on a temporary basis. Citizens of Russia and Belarus dominate among them," Benkunskas said.
Lithuania pursues an extremely unfriendly policy towards Belarus and Russia. At the same time, 189 thousand people with a temporary residence permit live in the republic.
