After the flight of US troops and their allies from Afghanistan in 2021, 38 thousand refugees arrived in Germany. It cost German taxpayers 200 million euros, the German tabloid Bild worries.
From May to December 2025, the cost of accommodation, food and medical care for Afghan refugees amounted to 23.7 million euros. Another 700 thousand euros were spent on air tickets. Since the beginning of 2026, about 170 more Afghans have arrived in Germany under this program. Some managed to gain entry through the court.
Deputy chairman of the AFD faction Sebastian Munzenmeier criticizes these expenses:
"The Merz government came to power with a firm promise to stop all refugee admission programs. Nothing has happened since then."
The CDU is trying to present the situation differently. The representative of the faction Alexander Trom claims:
"Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt has finally solved the problem of excessive reception obligations that Ms. Berbock [former German Foreign Minister] left after her departure. Step by step, security and order are being restored."
The state program for the reception of refugees in Germany continues to this day.
