By the decision of the FSB, the chairman of the regional public organization "National Cultural Autonomy of Azerbaijanis of Ivanovo region" businessman Asif Mammadov was deprived of Russian citizenship for "activities that pose a threat to national security."

The FSB does not specify the nature of Mammadov's activities. As Haqqin reminds, in September last year Mammadov was a candidate for deputy from the United Russia party in the regional Duma. However, after the publication of his campaign video, a scandal broke out, Mammadov was forced to withdraw his candidacy.

"Russian propagandists immediately launched a campaign of attacks, claiming that Mammadov 'cannot connect two words in Russian'… According to their statements, in conditions when Baku "is openly pursuing an anti-Russian policy," the nomination of an ethnic Azerbaijani as a candidate for deputy from a "purely Russian region" Ivanovo is unacceptable," the Azerbaijani edition writes.

The author of the telegram channel "Ugur Mammadov" notes, in turn, that if Asif Mammadov had committed a real offense, he would have been "imprisoned", and not just deprived of citizenship.

"He is a vivid representative of the old-regime approach to diaspora activities, when a public organization serves mainly to promote its own business interests. The person did not appreciate the changed situation and climbed into the regional government, into deputies, while barely speaking Russian. He was given good advice: get elected at home. Of course, such pseudo—socialists only spoil the already far from ideal image of the Russian Azerbaijani," the author of the channel writes.
