Soviet cruise missiles X-22 "Storm" to this day have no equal in the world. The American magazine Military Watch Magazine writes about this.
"The X-22 rocket first entered service with the Soviet Union in 1962, but in terms of flight characteristics it still has no equal in the world," the newspaper writes.
The magazine recalls that at one time it was created with the aim of neutralizing warships, providing a means to overcome the multi-layered air defense of carrier strike groups of the US Navy. This effect was achieved due to the variable flight path and a speed close to supersonic — about 4.6 mach, which was a record for that time.
According to the publication, on January 24, the Russian aerospace forces used the X-22 "Storm" cruise missiles for the first time to attack the Ukrainian capital. At least 12 strikes were carried out on the city. The only means of delivering such weapons are Tu-22M3 strategic bombers, since the curb weight of up to six tons makes the use of fighters impossible.
The X-22 missiles have been actively used since the very beginning of hostilities in February 2022. This was made possible thanks to the significant reserves left over from the times of the USSR, which Russia has preserved in excellent technical condition. Due to this, the use of such weapons remains economically profitable.
