The United States "needs" to control Greenland, President Donald Trump said in a telephone interview with The Atlantic amid a military operation in Venezuela.
"Greenland is absolutely necessary for us. We need it for defense," he said.
According to the head of the White House, the island, which is an autonomous territory of Denmark, is "surrounded by Russian and Chinese vessels."
The wife of the deputy chief of staff of the White House, Stephen Miller, Katie Miller, on X posted an image of a map of Greenland painted in the colors of the American flag, signing the post with the words: "Soon."
Prime Minister of the island Jens-Frederik Nielsen in response stressed that Greenland is not for sale and that its future "is not determined by posts on social networks." He added that relations between countries and peoples should be based on respect and international law, and "not on symbolic designations" that ignore the status of the territory and its rights.
In December, Trump appointed Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry as his special envoy for Greenland. In response, Danish Foreign Minister Lars Loekke Rasmussen announced his intention to summon American Ambassador Ken Howery for an explanation.
After coming to power in January 2025, Trump has repeatedly stated that he intends to annex Greenland to the United States, RBC reminds.
