US officials have sent a warning to Venezuelan Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello that his life may be in danger if he prevents the country's interim authorities from complying with US requirements, Reuters reports, citing sources.
It is noted that Cabello is one of the few people loyal to President Nicolas Maduro whom US President Donald Trump has decided to rely on to maintain stability in the Venezuela is in transition. At the same time, according to sources, American officials are particularly concerned that Cabello, given his history of political rivalry with the country's interim president Delcy Rodriguez, could play a "destructive role."
"Through intermediaries, they (American officials) conveyed to Cabello that in case of disobedience, he could suffer the same fate as Maduro ... or his life could be in danger," the newspaper writes.
On January 3, the United States launched a massive attack on Venezuela, President Nicolas Maduro and his wife Celia Flores were captured and taken to New York. US President Donald Trump said that Maduro and Flores would stand trial because they allegedly had to do with "drug terrorism" and posed a threat, including to the States. Maduro and his wife, during a court hearing in New York, declared their innocence on the charges.
Caracas, in connection with the US operation, requested an urgent UN meeting, the Venezuelan Supreme Court temporarily assigned the duties of the head of state to Vice President Rodriguez, on January 5 she officially assumed the post of acting President of Venezuela and took the oath of office before the National Assembly.
