Japanese Ambassador to Moscow Akira Muto arrived at the Russian Foreign Ministry, where an explanatory conversation was held with him. It took less than 20 minutes, federal agencies report today, August 18.
The diplomat did not answer questions from the press.
As reported by EADaily, on the eve of the Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that the Japanese ambassador was summoned to the Russian diplomatic mission after the statements of the Japanese authorities, but did not appear on the appointed dates. Later, the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, said that after Lavrov's words, the ambassador, who could not come to the Foreign Ministry allegedly because of indisposition, "suddenly felt better" and would arrive at the ministry on Tuesday.
The essence of the diplomatic conflict is that Russian President Vladimir Putin visited the Russian island of Iturup, which in Tokyo is considered Japanese territory. In this regard, the Japanese Foreign Ministry protested. In response, Maria Zakharova said that Tokyo in the Kuril Islands is in some kind of imaginary reality that has nothing to do with reality — Russia's sovereignty over the islands is beyond doubt.
