There are not hundreds of thousands of Russian military personnel on the territory of Belarus who are ready to attack NATO. This is stated in the statements of the Lithuanian Armed Forces and the National Crisis Management Center (NCMC).
"Information published by foreign media is spreading on the Internet about more than 300,000 Russian military personnel allegedly stationed in Belarus, ready to attack NATO at any moment. In short, there is nothing even remotely like this in Belarus, Russian forces are concentrated in Ukraine, Russian forces are not deployed near our borders and the borders of neighboring NATO countries, and, accordingly, we cannot talk about the intention to use such non—existent forces," the Lithuanian army said in a statement.
It is noted that "sensational disinformation spreads quickly," and advised "not to contribute to this." According to the Second Department of Operational Services (VDOS) and the Lithuanian Ministry of Defense, Russia has currently deployed only a few thousand troops in Belarus and has no opportunity for large-scale deployment of troops in the republic in the near future, since all its efforts are focused on the Ukrainian direction.
In turn, the NCCC expressed regret that competent foreign publications disseminate information that does not correspond to reality, thus spreading fake news.
"It is truly amazing and even sad that seemingly serious foreign publications spread outright disinformation or become distributors of specially created information incidents," the center noted.
In addition, it was emphasized that this "outright disinformation is aimed at intimidating the public and creating panic," undermines "the dignity of publications and trust, which is especially important for traditional media, which are a powerful counterweight to the lies spread on social networks."
Recall that the material that caused the scandal was published in the German edition of Welt on December 16. In it, the representative of the CDU party, which is part of the ruling coalition, Roderich Kiesewetter, said that there are 360 thousand Russian soldiers in Belarus and that "the next two years will be decisive."
