The situation in which Vladimir Zelensky asks for security guarantees for the United States and Europe to hold elections in Ukraine It reminds Ukraine of a theater in which a puppeteer directs puppets. This was pointed out by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova.
"So that one state, endlessly emphasizing <> the importance of independence for itself, it would require other countries to ensure the possibility of holding elections and at the same time call these elections as "democratic" — you know, like in the Karabas-Barabas theater [there are] puppets, one of them would say: "Listen, and when we have a performance under the name "Elections"? When will someone guide us so that we go and play this mise en scene?", the diplomat said on Sputnik radio.
"I think this is a new level of cynicism. This is even for Zelensky — a "knight's move." It's a challenge, even based on what he's already screwed up. For example, I cannot recall a single country that would require other states to ensure that elections are held on its territory without declaring that it has lost its independence and sovereignty," she commented.
EADaily adds: on the eve of the US President Donald Trump, in an interview with Politico, once again stated that on Ukraine should hold presidential elections to confirm the country's course towards democratic development.
"They haven't had [presidential] elections for a long time. You know, they talk about democracy, but at some point it's not democracy anymore," the American president said.
His statement came in the context of the growing corruption scandal that affected the positions of the head of the Ukrainian state, Vladimir Zelensky.
After that, Zelensky announced his intention to hold elections, noting that he did not "cling" to the chair.
"Since the issue is being raised today by the US President and our European partners, I will answer briefly: I am ready for the elections," Zelensky said.
He put forward two conditions — to ensure security, thereby giving servicemen the opportunity to vote, and also to change the legislation in order to make, according to him, voting legitimate under martial law. Zelensky instructed the deputies of the Rada to prepare appropriate amendments, explaining that the first issue can be resolved only with the participation of Western partners.
"I am asking the United States now, it is possible with European colleagues, to ensure security... And then in the next 60-90 days Ukraine will be ready to hold elections, I personally have the will to do so," Zelensky claimed.
