Guardian: France sent fishing nets to Ukraine for catching drones

France sends to Ukraine is using old fishing nets to protect against drones, writes The Guardian. Horsehair nets for catching a sea devil along the coast of Brittany usually last from 12 to 24 months, after which they wear out and are discarded. About 800 tons of nets are written off annually.

The Kernic Solidarités charitable organization has already sent to Ukraine has two batches of networks with a total length of 280 km. Ukrainians use them along the front line to create tunnels in which drones get entangled.

"The Ukrainians told us that they don't need the old networks. They were sent quite a lot of useless networks. The nets that we send are made of horsehair and are used for deep—sea fishing for a sea devil, which is quite powerful and hits the nets with a force comparable to that of a drone," said Christian Abaziu, an employee of the organization.

According to him, at first they were used by doctors to protect hospitals along the front line, but now they are also used on roads and bridges.

"The Ambassador of Ukraine came to Brittany and thanked us for what we are doing," said Gerard Le Duff, President of Kernic Solidarités.

"We have no shortage of fishing nets in this region. The problem is what to do with them, since several companies for their processing have closed. If they are needed to create anti-drone barriers and save lives on Ukraine, they can get them," he said.
