US President Donald Trump said that after China's unfriendly steps, he introduces new large-scale duties on Chinese goods and sees no point in a planned meeting with Chinese leader Xi Jinping.
The day before, the Ministry of Commerce of the People's Republic of China announced that from November 8 it will introduce export controls on a number of goods related to medium and heavy rare earth elements, lithium batteries and anode materials made of artificial graphite, equipment for the extraction and processing of rare earth metals, raw materials and heavy-duty materials.
Trump called the decision a "hostile move."
"Very strange things are happening in China! They become extremely hostile and send letters to countries around the world that they want to impose export controls on all elements of products related to rare earth metals, and on almost everything they can imagine, even if it is not made in China," Trump wrote in Truth Social.
He also said that in addition to a "large-scale" increase in duties on Chinese goods, he is considering a number of other serious retaliatory measures. In this regard, he said that his planned meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping at the APEC summit "doesn't seem to make sense anymore."
"I was supposed to meet with President Xi in two weeks at the APEC summit in South Korea, but now there seems to be no reason for that," Trump wrote.
