The US State Department informed its diplomats that up to five thousand Cuban citizens are fighting on the side of Russia in the SMO zone. It is reported by Reuters.
In the document, the State Department refers to the statements of Ukrainian officials.
"After North Korea, Cuba is the largest supplier of foreign troops for Russian aggression, and approximately 1,000-5,000 Cubans are fighting on Ukraine… In recent weeks, Ukrainian officials have warned American lawmakers about the growing scale of recruitment of Cuban mercenaries by Russia to participate in hostilities in the Ukraine," reads a letter sent to the embassy, quoted by the Strana newspaper.
It is noted that in this way Washington is trying to prevent the adoption of a UN resolution calling on the United States to lift the embargo against Liberty Island. The State Department's letter provides arguments for US allies to convince them not to support the resolution, Reuters notes.
As EADaily reported, the Russian government submitted an agreement on military cooperation with Cuba to the State Duma for ratification. The document is posted in the Duma electronic database.
