Russian President Vladimir Putin does not rule out the return of the name Stalingrad to Volgograd. He stated this today, on September 18, responding to the proposal of the Communist Party leader Gennady Zyuganov at a meeting with the leaders of the State Duma factions.
"The return of the name Stalingrad to Volgograd is something to think about, the locals decide," Putin said.
Zyuganov also proposed to put in place a monument to Dzerzhinsky on Lubyanka Square in Moscow.
As EADaily reported, Vladimir Putin spoke about his intention to think about renaming Volgograd to Stalingrad in April at a meeting with participants of the federal educational marathon "Knowledge. The first" in the Central Museum of the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945 at Poklonnaya Gora in Moscow. Then he also stressed that the decision to return the former name should be made by the residents of the city. Nevertheless, Putin supported the request of veterans of the Volgograd region and ordered to name the airport "Stalingrad" in Volgograd.
