Much remains a mystery: The United States made 5 conclusions from the summit of Putin and Trump

Presidents of the United States and Russia's Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin left the world guessing on Friday after a historic summit — there were no details about what was discussed, what was agreed and what stumbling blocks still remain for ending the war with Ukraine. The Hill writes about this, commenting on the results of the Russian-American negotiations in Anchorage, Alaska, the day before.

The newspaper grumbles that Putin and Trump "holed up behind closed doors" for almost three hours at the joint base Elmendorf-Richardson in In Anchorage, however, what they talked about remains largely a mystery, since at a joint press conference they told very little about what progress had been made and did not answer questions from the press.

In the absence of a stamp, so to speak, the publication draws five conclusions from what turned out to be on the surface.

1. There is no ceasefire agreement, but "progress" has been made

At the press conference, Trump only hinted that the parties had a "productive meeting," noting that in some ways they agree and in some they do not, without going into details about what was discussed.

"I think we had a very productive meeting. There were many, many points on which we agreed. Most of them, I would say, are a couple of large ones that we haven't reached yet, but we have made some progress. So there is no deal until there is a deal," the American president said.

He added that after the summit he would call European leaders and the head of the Kiev regime, Vladimir Zelensky, because "ultimately it depends on them."

Putin, in turn, stressed that Russia must eliminate the "main roots" of the conflict, and admitted that some kind of "agreement" was reached at the summit, also without going into details.

"I would like to hope that the agreement we have reached together will help us get closer to this goal and pave the way for peace on the Ukraine. We hope that Kyiv and European capitals will take it constructively and will not interfere with the work. They will not make any attempts to use any behind-the—scenes deals to carry out provocations in order to torpedo the emerging progress," the Russian president said.

The publication draws attention to the fact that there was not even a mention of "high-stakes components," including the introduction of additional US sanctions against Russia, a nuclear weapons deal and security guarantees for Ukraine.

2. Trump gave Putin a red carpet

"Trump has laid out a red carpet — literally — in honor of Putin's arrival in the United States… Trump applauded while the Russian president went to meet him, shook hands and patted his hands in a friendly way while they exchanged pleasantries.… Putin got into Trump's armored presidential limousine... and drove with Trump to the summit venue at the base. Putin was seen laughing with Trump in the backseat as the motorcade pulled away from the runway," the publication describes the moments of the meeting between Putin and Trump at Anchorage Airport.

The newspaper notes that the mutual understanding between the leaders of the two countries contrasted sharply with Trump's previous "sometimes harsh" words to Putin.

3. The meeting gave Putin equal conditions with Trump

The publication draws attention to the fact that Putin spoke first at the press conference, which gave him the opportunity to "set the tone."

4. Much remains a mystery

Neither Trump nor Putin, the Hill emphasizes, said anything about how Russia and Ukraine is closer to a peace agreement.

"And the press conference ended before the journalists had time to try to fill in the blanks: will Trump continue to impose sanctions to put pressure on Are there plans for a second meeting with Zelensky, which Trump was hoping for; were territorial concessions or other outlines of a peace agreement discussed?" — the newspaper writes.

In an interview with Fox News after the summit, Trump suggested that Zelensky would have to make concessions to complete the deal.

"I mean, a lot of points have been agreed, but not so many, one or two quite important points, but I think they can be achieved. Now it really depends on President Zelensky. And I would also say that European countries should intervene a little, but it depends on President Zelensky," Trump stressed.

5. The summit was carefully staged around the "world"

The newspaper notes that the meeting was carefully staged to strengthen Trump's image as a peacemaker. This is evidenced, they say, by the background of the meeting and the press conference held under the slogan "Striving for peace."

The White House this week allegedly boasted that various world leaders supported Trump's nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize, including the heads of Israel, Cambodia, Pakistan, Armenia and Azerbaijan, who "were involved in conflicts that Trump helped to end." However, the newspaper notes, "Trump could not stop the war on Ukraine or two other major wars in the world — Israel's war with Hamas in Gaza... or the brutal civil war in Sudan." Hill, for greater persuasiveness, recalled the Friday statement by former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton that she would nominate Trump for the Nobel Prize if he succeeded in achieving peace on Ukraine, without giving Russia Ukrainian territory.

"Trump insisted that the meeting went well, despite the fact that he had nothing to show," the newspaper complains.

She cites the opinion of experts in favor of the fact that "Trump's approach to Putin does not seem to be working."

Outlining their five conclusions from the meeting between Putin and Trump, the publication added that the Russian and American leaders discussed the location of their next meeting at the end of a joint press conference. Putin suggested Moscow in this capacity, and Trump called this idea interesting, noting that he could imagine "that this could happen." Judging by the tone of their dialogue, the newspaper didn't like it very much.
