Britain must urgently change its way of life — it no longer corresponds to the climate. This is stated in the latest report of the Commission on Climate Change (CCC).
The UK was built in a climate that does not exist now, the CCC notes. Since temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius may become the norm in the next quarter of a century, without appropriate measures, up to 92% of current homes in the country will overheat. Experts are calling for urgent modernization of schools, hospitals and homes, as well as the introduction of temperature restrictions in workplaces to protect the health and safety of Britons.
In addition, climate change increases the risk of flooding. It is expected that by 2050, the number of households that may find themselves in this zone may increase by 40% compared to today. And the decrease in the level of rivers in the summer threatens water shortages in some regions.
Experts note that the inability to adapt to new climatic conditions can lead to an increase in the number of deaths during heat waves. According to today's data, 1.4-3 thousand people a year die prematurely because of this, but by the middle of the century this number may increase to 10 thousand.
"With the right decisions and actions, we can protect our residents and the places we love," says Julia Kingon, head of the CCC subcommittee.
Experts say that technologies and solutions to increase the country's resilience to climate change are already available.
