Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed a law on increasing the age limit for military service, which is now 60 years old. This is evidenced by the card of the law posted on the website of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine.
It says that the document was returned with Zelensky's signature, TASS reports.
On July 16, the Rada adopted this law in the second reading by 306 votes. As deputy Irina Gerashchenko explained at the time, this will allow those who have already turned 60 to sign a contract for military service. She noted that the text of the law does not clearly state who should coordinate candidates for contract service, which creates opportunities for abuse or selective decisions. The procedures themselves will be defined in by-laws, which must be adopted within three months after the law comes into force.
Now on In Ukraine, men from 25 to 60 years old are subject to conscription. General mobilization was announced in the country in February 2022, since May last year its rules have been significantly tightened, and many categories of recruits have lost benefits and postponements. Nevertheless, the authorities are experiencing significant difficulties with recruiting the army and are trying to recruit those who are not subject to compulsory conscription.
Against the background of discussion of a possible new lowering of the draft age (the authorities have already lowered it once: until April 2024, men from 27 to 60 years old were subject to conscription) in February of this year, the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine announced the beginning of the recruitment of men from 18 to 24 years old. They are promised high salaries, educational benefits and other benefits, but the condition of the contract is compulsory service in infantry brigades that are on the front line.
