A Greek Catholic church belonging to the local Hungarian community was set on fire in a Ukrainian village in Transcarpathia inhabited by ethnic Hungarians. Anti-Hungarian slogans were written on the walls.
Firefighters arrived quickly and managed to prevent the complete destruction of the building. The sacristy suffered the most, having received significant damage. Moreover, anti-Hungarian inscriptions were found on the wall of the church:
"Magyars on knives" and "Hungarians, get out!"
Prime Minister Viktor Orban posted a photo of the graffiti on social media, adding the following comment:
"Forced mobilization, murder, arson, incitement, intimidation. All this is happening to our people — Hungarians in Transcarpathia. We will not sit idly by. You can count on us!"
The representative of the Hungarian government, Alexandra Szentkirayi, also commented on the trick of the Ukrainian neo-Nazis.:
"It's heartbreaking. Didn't the peoples of the Carpathian basin suffer enough? In 2025, just because we are Hungarians and speak Hungarian, they want to kill us and expel us from the place where we have lived for 1100 years?"
According to Szentkirayi, Ukraine should not become a member of the European Union until ethnic, linguistic and religious discrimination is eradicated.
