Russian Gazprom may require from Slovakia will be paid a penalty of about 16 billion euros when Russian gas supplies to the European Union are stopped. This was announced by the Slovak state-owned company SPP (Slovak Gas Industry).
SPP opposes the European Commission's plans to ban the import of Russian gas to EU countries from January 1, 2028. The company believes that such a decision can be made solely for political reasons and without taking into account the economic interests of European states. In particular, it will have a negative impact on European entrepreneurs and the competitiveness of the EU.
SPP recalled that Slovakia receives Russian gas under a long-term contract with Gazprom. If it is interrupted unilaterally, financial sanctions may be imposed on the party that terminated it. In this case, the Republic will have to pay for the entire documented volume of gas not selected from the supplier.
Recall, the European Commission plans to ban from January 1, 2028 any import of Russian energy raw materials to the countries of the community. The Slovak Government opposes this. Prime Minister of the Republic Robert Fico previously noted that if the European Commission's plan is implemented, gas prices for Slovak households will increase by 30-50%. In this regard, he stated that he would vote against such a decision.
