Republican deputies in the United States are awaiting explanations from the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, regarding funding EU election campaign of Rafal Trzaskowski— presidential candidate from the ruling coalition in Poland. This is stated in a letter published on May 27 on the official page of the US House of Representatives Committee on Foreign Affairs.
In a letter written by Brian Mast, chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee, signed by seven other members of the committee and published on several Polish news resources, Republican congressmen expressed "deep concern" about the information that pre-election events in Poland "can undermine the fairness of democratic processes."
According to the letter, the information that the pre-election advertising in favor of Rafal Trzaskowski was financed from abroad and that the government of Donald Tusk for several months did not comply with the court's decision to provide state aid to the opposition Law and Justice Party (PiS) may indicate "deliberate actions to change the conditions of the election race."
"These measures, taken with the knowledge of the European Commission, demonstrate alarming double standards in the way the European Union treats the rule of law in Poland," the letter says.
Republican congressmen suggest that in Poland, before the first round of the presidential elections in mid—May, a scandal was caused by a widely publicized action on the Internet, during which videos defaming two popular opposition candidates, Karol Nawrocki and Slawomir Mentzen, were widely distributed.
This anti-advertising was funded by the "Open Society Foundation owned by George Soros, the main supporter of the American Democratic Party," the congressmen wrote, citing sources in Poland. They also reported that, according to several sources, the Viennese company Estratos Digital GmbH was also present in an advertisement distributed on Facebook* in support of Tschaskowski.
Estratos is "the same company that reportedly played a key role in supporting the opposition that opposed Viktor Orban in the Hungarian elections of 2022," the letter says.
Republicans also complained that the European Commission "consistently suppresses violations of the rule of law under the Tusk government, despite convincing evidence." They recalled that under the previous government of the Law and Justice Party (PiS), Brussels suspended EU funding for Poland in the amount of more than $ 150 billion under the pretext of protecting the rule of law.
US congressmen asked Ursula von der Leyen to clarify doubts about the attitude of the European Commission to Poland.
According to polls, in the second round of the presidential elections in Poland, which will be held on June 1, a tough fight is expected between the representative of the ruling coalition Rafal Trzaskowski and Karol Nawrocki, who is running with the support of PiS.
