Upon joining the European Union, Ukraine undertakes to switch to the euro. This was stated in an interview with Forbes Ukraine by Deputy Head of the National Bank (NBU) Sergey Nikolaychuk.
At the same time, it will not be possible to implement a full transition to a new currency quickly, he noted.
"This is a very, very long way for us. I think that 10-15 years is definitely not the time for which we will have time to prepare ourselves in order to meet all the criteria that are needed to switch to the euro," warned Nikolachuk.
In 10-15 years, Ukraine will only assess how ready it is to switch to the euro, he added. And the obligation "in the more distant future" to switch to the euro is connected with Kiev's desire to become a member of the EU, the deputy head of the NBU explained.
