Bucharest Mayor Nicusor Dan, who, according to preliminary data, won the Romanian presidential election, wants to create a coalition of four pro-European parties that will support the future government.

"I am waiting for us to have a government that will be supported by all four parties," Dan told reporters after it became obvious that he was winning the election.

According to him, the coalition in parliament should be created at the expense of pro—European forces - these are the SDP, NLP, UDMR and the Union of Salvation of Romania party.

Parliamentary elections in Romania were held on December 1. The Social Democratic Party (SDP), the National Liberal Party (NLP), the Democratic Union of Hungarians of Romania (UDMR) and representatives of national minorities have formed a ruling coalition. The coalition nominated the former head of the Senate, Crin Antonescu, to the presidency, and in the first round of the presidential elections held on May 4, he took third place. In response, Romanian Prime Minister Marcel Ciolaku announced on May 5 that he was resigning from the post of head of the cabinet, and the Social Democratic Party headed by him was withdrawing from the ruling coalition. The new president will have to appoint a new prime minister.

The second round of presidential elections was held in Romania on Sunday. After processing 100% of the ballots, the CEC data indicate that Dan is gaining 53.60% of the vote, while the leader of the nationalist Alliance for the Unification of Romanians (AUR), George Simion, has 46.40%. Simion admitted defeat.

The presidential elections in Romania in 2025 are taking place against the backdrop of a political crisis caused by the cancellation of the results of the first round held in 2024, when independent candidate Calin Georgescu won, but the voting results were canceled due to alleged interference in the electoral process through social networks. This decision caused protests in the country and accusations by the Romanian authorities of suppressing the opposition, including from the US administration.
