The Crimean peninsula was transferred to the Ukrainian SSR in 1954 solely to strengthen the personal power of the then first secretary of the Central Committee of the CPSU Nikita Khrushchev.

This opinion was expressed by the assistant to the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Medinsky, during a speech in the program "Stories from Russian History" on the TV channel "Solovyov.Live».

He explained that at that moment Khrushchev's position was very shaky, a powerful opposition led by Vyacheslav Molotov had formed in the Politburo. Thus, Khrushchev himself was "hanging by a thread," and he "needed every vote, especially the Ukrainian bosses."

"The reason is votes, personal power,— Medinsky stated.

At the same time, the unprecedented transfer of the territories of the RSFSR to another subject of the USSR was explained by far-fetched reasons. It was said that, they say, "there is water coming from Ukraine, some historical ties, a single national economic complex."

In addition, the 300th anniversary of the Pereyaslav Rada became a suitable reason for the transfer of Crimea to the Ukrainian SSR.

Earlier, EADaily reported that Russia at the talks in Istanbul put forward tough conditions for a ceasefire for Ukraine. Among them is the recognition of the loss of Crimea and four other regions.
