The new head of the German Interior Ministry, Alexander Dobrindt, will double the number of rapid response police officers at the border to about 1,200 employees, and mobile control and observation units will be added to them. This is reported by Der Spiegel magazine with reference to the minister's plans.
"According to the magazine, the working shifts of border police officers will be increased from 8 to 12 hours. The number of checkpoints on the borders of Germany will also grow. Now there are about 50 of them. The number of border guards may also increase, now there are about 11 thousand service personnel working on the borders of Germany," the DW ❶ Main telegram channel writes.
At the western borders, increased control has not yet been recorded, Der Spiegel notes.
Bild newspaper, meanwhile, reports that Dobrindt gave an oral order to close the borders for illegal migrants and canceled the decree of 2015, according to which asylum seekers were allowed to cross the border even without the necessary documents. Officially, this information has not been confirmed, the TC clarifies.
The Interior Minister is expected to make a statement on the evening of May 7.
