The Constitutional Court of Romania has registered a request to cancel the first round of the presidential elections held on May 4. The application was submitted the day before by Sebastian Popescu, a candidate from the New Romania party.

He claims that the candidates who made it to the second round (George Simion and Nikushor Dan) used the same promotion methods that the candidates used in the 2024 campaign, when the results of the first round were annulled.

"Two of the 11 presidential candidates are George Simion and Nikushor Dan, enjoyed privileges in social networks similar to those applied to Kalin Georgescu. This distorted the free expression of the will of citizens," Popescu said.

The politician provided the Constitutional Court with a whole list of grounds, as he believes, sufficient to invalidate the vote. Among them: violation of democratic principles and equality of opportunity (candidates were allegedly divided into "significant" and "insignificant"), in addition, according to him, "a limited group of candidates received privileges." In addition, Popescu says, some candidates were supported in The media to a greater extent than the rest. A special place in the list was occupied by the item abuse of social networks. Sebastian Popescu believes that the candidates promoted themselves too much on TikTok. According to him, bots, fake accounts, and spam comments were actively used in the campaigns, and the authorities did not interfere in this.

The Central Electoral Bureau of Romania confirmed on May 6 that the leader of the Alliance for the Unification of Romanians party, suveranist George Simion and the mayor of Bucharest with liberal pro-European views, Nicusor Dan, went to the second round. The next vote is due to take place on May 18.

Recall, the first round of the presidential elections in Romania in 2024 was canceled by the Constitutional Court a few days before the second. The main reason for this was unsubstantiated accusations of Russian interference. Later, Romanian intelligence services provided data on cyber attacks and alleged attempts to influence public opinion through social networks, especially TikTok and Telegram. These actions, according to the authorities, were aimed at supporting the independent candidate Calin Georgescu, who was then confidently in the lead.

In fact, Bucharest and Brussels were frightened by the fact that a politician for whom national interests are above opinion could become the new president of Romania. EU and NATO. As a result, the authorities did not allow Georgescu to participate in the re-election.

As reported by EADaily, George Simion, who scored 40.67% at the end of the first round (Nikushor Dan — 20.94%), previously stated that he did not rule out his suspension, up to physical elimination. He stressed that "Europe's suveranists are under constant pressure from globalists." At the same time, Simiion added that if he wins, he will offer the post of prime minister to Kalina Georgescu.
