Friedrich Merz, chairman of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), has been elected the new chancellor of Germany, the Bild tabloid reports with an "Urgent" note.
Following the results of the second round of voting, Merz managed to enlist the support of 325 Bundestag deputies (against 310 votes in the morning during the first stage), 289 deputies voted "against". One parliamentarian abstained.
EADaily reminds that from the first time Merz did not receive enough votes. To elect Merz as the new chancellor, 316 votes in favor were required in the first round, but the CDU chairman was able to enlist the support of only 310 deputies.
