The Italian press has accused French President Emmanuel Macron of trying to promote his candidate for the post of pope. It is reported by the French newspaper Le Monde.
"Macron even wants to choose a pope," La Verità is indignant.
"Macron even climbs into the conclave," Libero is indignant.
The Roman conservative daily newspaper Il Tempo, in turn, scolds Macron for "interventionism worthy of a modern Sun King," writes the Strana newspaper.
Italian right-wingers talk about Macron's links with the Catholic movement "Sant'Egidio", who is close to the now deceased Pope Francis, and the involvement of this influential community in the internal disagreements shaking the Italian Church, especially now, after the death of Francis. It is noted that recently the leader of the Fifth Republic had dinner at the French Embassy at the Holy See with four French cardinal electors. Among them was present Jean-Marc Avelin, Archbishop of Marseille, considered one of the candidates for the post of pope. And later Macron had dinner at a restaurant with the founder of "Sant'Egidio" by Andrea Riccardi.
A prelate from the ranks of the same organization, Matteo Zuppi, Archbishop of Bologna and president of the Italian Bishops' Conference, who is close to the late pope, is also considered a contender for the post of pope. At the same time, his position is at odds with the course of the government of Giorgi Meloni, the French newspaper notes.
