The United States demands that Athens transfer Patriot air defense systems to Ukraine, which were sent to Saudi Arabia, and send a frigate to the Gulf of Aden to fight the Houthis. This is reported by the Greek edition Kathimerini.
"In fact, the Americans at two different levels have asked Athens to deploy the currently available (Patriot) batteries, which are currently being used to protect Saudi Arabia, on the territory of Ukraine on the grounds that, given the US decision to reduce support for Kiev, responsibility for armament is now passing into the hands of Europeans," the newspaper writes.
The newspaper notes that Athens, which is in the process of forming its own multi-level air defense dome, cannot give such a valuable weapon system to Ukraine.
However, it is much more difficult for Washington to respond to another request — to send a frigate to the Gulf of Aden to participate in the US operation against the Houthis, since "this is a mission that protects, among other things, the interests of commercial shipping — the most important foundation of international law, the publication emphasizes.
