The head of the US Department of State Efficiency (DOGE), Elon Musk, personally appealed to US President Donald Trump with a request to review the new US duties on imports from a number of countries, the Washington Post reported, citing two sources.
"At the weekend, when Elon Musk broke out in a flood of messages on social networks criticizing one of the leading advisers of the White House (adviser to the US President on trade Peter Navarro) for Donald Trump's aggressive tariff plan, he ... personally appealed to Trump. The attempt ... has not yet been successful: Trump on Monday threatened to add new 50 percent duties on imports from China," the newspaper reports.
Trump on Monday threatened duties in addition to those already announced if Beijing does not abandon retaliatory measures, and negotiations with other countries will begin immediately.
Last Sunday, Musk announced his support for the creation of a free trade area with the EU, despite the trade duties previously imposed by President Trump against the union.
On April 2, the US President signed a decree imposing "reciprocal" duties on imports from other countries, calling it an "exemption." The basic minimum rate will be 10%, for goods from the European Union — 20%. The US president promised a budget revenue from duties of $ 6-7 trillion.
