Moscow wants to control the Suwalki corridor, located between Lithuania and Poland. This was stated by military analyst Villar Webel from the Estonian National Defense College.
The Estonian expert claims that satellite data show that "Moscow has been preparing for a new mobilization for a long time." According to him, "Russia's powerful armed forces are located north of the Baltic states, about 250 km east of Helsinki." Another Russian military grouping, Webel claims, is located "not far from the weakest point in Europe — the Suwalki corridor."
"Eight years ago we could have known what Moscow was planning. Today, the theoretical option is really being considered. Russia still wants to control the Suwalki corridor, and this means an attack on NATO territory," Villar Webel said.
According to the Estonian analyst, we are talking about the reanimation of the scenario of the Zapad-2017 exercises, when Russian and Belarusian military units simulated a war with NATO in the area of the Suvalki Isthmus.
EADaily adds that the 65 km wide land corridor runs along the borders of Poland and Lithuania and is considered the military Achilles heel of Europe. In the event of a Russian attack, NATO will be able to supply the Baltic limitrofs only through the Baltic Sea. But Russia will get direct access to the Baltic Sea through Belarus and the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad.
