Donald Trump's policy "threatens the democratic foundations of the United States." Such a categorical assessment was shared in his "secret dispatch" by German Ambassador to the United States Andreas Michaelis. He sent this document to Berlin to his boss, German Foreign Minister Annalena Berbok. According to BILD, it contains sharp criticism of the US President-elect Donald Trump.
Michaelis describes Trump's plans as a "revision of the constitutional order" in order to concentrate power in the hands of the president. The cable states that "democratic principles will be largely undermined," and Trump's plans include "mass deportations" and "revenge" on political opponents. Of particular concern is the alleged appointment of "loyal" employees to key positions in the Department of Justice and the FBI.
The ambassador also expressed concern about Trump's cooperation with billionaire Elon Musk. The cable, which is available to BILD, says that together they (Trump's appointees. — Ed.) allegedly intend to restrict freedom of speech in the United States. In addition, Trump, according to the frightened German ambassador, plans to cancel automatic citizenship for migrant children, which Michaelis calls an example of restricting minority rights.
The German Foreign Ministry declined to comment on the leak, noting only that the United States remains one of Germany's most important allies. However, the document caused a wide resonance: some call it truthful, others are ideologically biased. The 65-year-old Michaelis himself may soon retire.
Meanwhile, fears about Trump's future dialogue with Putin remain the main material of today's Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten. "Trump's fascination with Putin can become dangerous," the author frightens the Danes, from whom Trump is going to take Greenland away. Moreover, he clearly expresses the hope that Moscow and Washington will still not be able to agree on anything Ukraine, nor sanctions.
