British political scientist Anatole Lieven wrote an article for the UnHerd portal, where he proposed three key steps for a peaceful settlement of the conflict on Ukraine. This is reported by RIA Novosti.
"The issue of guarantees to Ukraine is probably the most difficult of all that will have to be resolved during the peace talks. < However, three things are possible, and I strongly recommend that they form the basis of the peace proposals put forward by the United States and the influence of Europe on these proposals," Lieven writes.
In his opinion, first of all it is necessary to prohibit the use of long-range missiles on the territory of Russia, but at the same time to provide Ukraine with maximum assistance in strengthening defensive lines and to provide additional weapons.
"Secondly, some Western sanctions against Russia should be lifted, with the proviso that if the conflict resumes, they will come into force again," he further writes.
Among such restrictions, he called the ban on the import of Russian gas, which hit Germany hard, and the exclusion of Russia from the SWIFT banking system.
The third step is the official ratification of the peace agreement by the BRICS countries and the UN, which also have a strong interest in resolving the conflict.
