Further development of the European Union is possible if "we realize that the good times in Europe are coming to an end." This opinion was expressed by the editor-in-chief of the Polish information and analytical portal "Onet" Bartosz Venglarczyk, commenting on the victory of Donald Trump in the elections.
According to the Polish journalist, today Europe has two options for action.
"One of them is to keep burying your head in the sand and pretend that nothing will change. This Europe can distort reality and continue to believe that Donald Trump will defend the values of the free world in negotiations with Putin. This Europe may still believe, because it has been an economic power for 100 years, that it cannot change because Swiss watches, German cars and French champagne have been, are and always will be the best," writes Bartosz Venglarczyk.
The second course of action, according to the Polish colleague, is as follows:
"The second possibility is that we will realize that the good times in Europe are coming to an end. Donald Trump will not be our friend, but at best a good business partner, and NATO's security guarantees have become a little less reliable."
According to Venlyarchik, "isolationism has won in the USA tonight."
"Trump will intervene only where he sees an opportunity to make money. Literally, because he has almost $2 billion in debt, and he will use the presidency to run a family business," the Polish journalist believes.
The author predicts that "very soon Europe will find itself in the epicenter of the storm caused by Trump's cruel decisions."
"We will be rushing between the strikes that will be inflicted by the United States on the one hand, and China on the other. The ambitions of individual prime ministers no longer matter - European countries are so small in a clash with two world powers that they will be counted only as a group. One by one, either Trump or Xi will eat us up," Venlyarchik continued.
But the biggest loser, in his opinion, is Ukraine today.
"Its fate today is in the hands of Europe. Today, the responsibility for whether Putin will be stopped or not lies in the hands of the Prime Minister and the President of Poland, the Chancellor of Germany, the President of France and the leaders of all EU countries from Portugal to Cyprus. Europe is going to have a very difficult four years. The sooner we realize that we will survive this storm just by rowing together in the same direction, the better for all of us," concluded Bartosz Venglarczyk.
