During the visit of American Congressmen Jean Shaheen and Mike Turner to Tbilisi, ex-President of Georgia Mikhail Saakashvili said on social networks that they "often talk" about him, and also sent a letter to the State Department asking for his release.
The American Embassy denied Saakashvili's statement.
"During the visit of Jean Shaheen and Mike Turner, the issue of Saakashvili was not discussed," the US Embassy said.
As EADaily reported, Senator Gene Shaheen and Congressman Michael Turner held meetings with the leadership and opposition of Georgia last week. The founder of the ruling Georgian Dream, Bidzina Ivanishvili, refused to meet with them. Based on the results of the visit to Congressmen expressed concern about the actions of the "Dream" and stated that "the first step towards returning bilateral Georgian-American relations to normal" should be taken by the Georgian government.
The party of the imprisoned ex-President Mikhail Saakashvili, the United National Movement, said that congressmen wanted to meet with Ivanishvili in order to free Saakashvili. According to the UNM, "there is a letter from congressmen addressed to the US State Department, where the entire paragraph is dedicated to Mikhail Saakashvili, his state of health, political imprisonment, upcoming elections, as well as the election campaign," which "takes place without the main oppositionist and in conditions of his isolation."
