A mountain lake in the basin of the Talgar River, flowing through the city of the same name in the Almaty region, may overflow its banks and break through the protective dams installed along the riverbed in front of the settlement. This was reported by the press service of the Akimat (administration) of the Almaty region.
"Lake No. 19 in the basin of the Talgar River poses a real threat of a breakthrough through intramoral runoff channels with possible water outlet in the northern and northeastern parts of the modern moraine," the information says.
According to forecasts, a breakthrough may occur from August 6. The date is calculated based on the background assessment methodology.
Currently, a difficult mudflow situation persists in the mountains of the region due to an increase in the temperature background, intensive melting of glaciers and filling of moraine-glacial lakes and an increase in runoff in the Talgar riverbed.
Residents and guests of the Talgar district are not allowed to travel to the highlands outside the hydraulic structures located in the upper part of the city of Talgar.
The regional administration appealed to the local population with a request to listen to social networks, television and radio broadcasts, as well as to respond immediately to the sounds of sirens.
