The new system of higher education will be introduced in Russia from September 1, 2026. This was reported by RIA Novosti with reference to the Ministry of Education and Science.

"The transition of all Russian universities to the updated system of higher education is planned from September 1, 2026. By the specified date, the Ministry of Education and Science of Russia will prepare and approve the relevant regulatory legal acts,"the agency cites the information of the department.

At the same time, it is specified that students studying under the current educational programs will be able to complete the development of the program they enrolled in.

Earlier, the head of the Ministry of Education and Science Valery Falkov said that 2025 will be devoted to active actions to transition to a new model of higher education.

The decree of the President of Russia on the improvement of the national system of higher education is currently being implemented. In May 2023, a pilot project was launched involving six leading universities (Moscow Aviation Institute, MISIS University of Science and Technology, Moscow Pedagogical State University, Baltic Federal University, St. Petersburg Mining University and Tomsk State University).

Within its framework, students receive basic higher education, specialized higher education in master's degree programs and professional higher education in postgraduate programs.
