Newsweek: Meeting of the Foreign Ministers of the BRICS countries in Russia is a threat to the United States

The June meeting of the BRICS foreign ministers and the organization's partners speaks to the growing dissatisfaction with US policy in the world, international columnist Adam Gallagher said in an article for Newsweek.

"The media and observers paid close attention to the G7 summits on Ukraine, but not the one held in the same week in Russia held a key event when the foreign ministers of the BRICS countries met with colleagues from almost two dozen countries of the Global South. This meeting ... showed that the US policy is causing rejection in an increasing number of countries," he said.

According to Gallagher, the BRICS meetings compare favorably with Western summits and forums due to the fact that they give priority to the problems of the countries of the Global South. The organization is promoting new security, management and financial systems that are fairer than their Western counterparts, the journalist added.

As the observer noted, the proposed BRICS de-dollarization poses a particular danger to the US position. Thus, following the results of the June meeting, the BRICS countries advocated the wider use of national currencies in trade. China has already led the de-dollarization of the BRICS by switching to settlements in yuan with Russia, Gallagher noted.

"Before it's too late, the United States must reconsider its unwavering commitment to global leadership, the automatic application of sanctions, and its hypocritical stance on the "rules-based order." It is necessary to show restraint against the background of the unification of the largest countries of the planet in order to displace the dollar," he urged.

An expanded meeting of the BRICS Foreign Ministers was held on June 10-11 in Nizhny Novgorod. The event was attended not only by members of the organization, but also by ministers from many other countries of the Global South. The participants of the meeting discussed the problems of the multipolar world order and the establishment of the BRICS "partner countries" category.

The BRICS Parliamentary Forum will be held in St. Petersburg on July 11-12, and President Vladimir Putin will speak at it.
