The world's only Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost ("Silver Ghost") semi-tracked vehicle, part of the collection of the State Historical Museum-Reserve "Gorki Leninskie", left the Memorial Garage for the first time in 35 years. This is reported by TASS.
"Due to the upcoming overhaul of the garage, we have a need to move the car to temporary storage. Since the car cannot run on its own, we have developed a special project, during the implementation of which the specialists of the museum-reserve have gained unique experience," said Yevgeny Saramud, director of the museum—reserve.
15 specialists and three pieces of equipment — two forklifts and a manipulator - were involved in moving the historic car.
It is planned that by the end of 2026 the car will return to the Memorial Garage of the Engineering Building of the Gorki estate. During this time, the building will undergo major repairs and the museum exposition will be updated.
The Rolls-Royce "Silver Ghost" car was bought in England in 1922 for a government garage, the press service of the museum-reserve reports on its page on the social network. Originally it was a "regular" car on four wheels. In 1928, the car was equipped with a half-track propulsion system designed by French engineer Adolphe Kegress. In Russia on Putilov plant in In Petrograd, it was redesigned: the undercarriage of the chassis was put on tracks, and skis were fixed to the front wheels. The car was perfect for winter trips. In this car, V.I. Lenin came from Moscow to Gorki, took walks around the Moscow region. Due to the fact that after Lenin's death the car remained in the Slides and it was practically not used, all the details in it — from rubber tracks to a tarpaulin awning — are "native". This is the only Rolls-Royce in the world on a half-track.
In 2022, the Expert Council of the Polytechnic Museum awarded the car the status of "Monument of Science and Technology of Russia".
