The case of the Italian jeweler Mario Rogero, who shot two robbers, may cause a political crisis in the country. This is reported by local media.
It is reported that after rejecting the appeal against Rogero's conviction for a period of 14 years and 9 months, the ruling Italian parties called for the pardon of the 72-year-old jeweler. Defense Minister Guido Crosetto said that it is necessary to use all possible mechanisms to avoid imprisonment for the jeweler. At the same time, the Minister of Justice Carlo Nordio began the procedure related to the possible pardon of the jeweler. This caused outrage from Italian President Sergio Mattarella, who received the minister at his Quirinal Palace. After the meeting, the presidential administration issued a very tough statement.
"This afternoon, President Sergio Mattarella received the Minister of Justice Carlo Nordio at the Quirinale Palace to clarify the limits of the Minister's powers regarding pardons, powers that the Constitution assigns exclusively to the President of the Republic, which was confirmed by the Constitutional Court in Resolution No. 200 of 2006," the statement said.
At the same time in The Quirinale emphasized: it is not a question of whether Rogero deserves a pardon. The issue concerns only the observance of constitutional powers. Moreover, the reasoning part of the decision of the Court of Cassation in the jeweler's case has not even been published yet, so it is premature to discuss a possible pardon.
Recall, on April 28, 2021, in Grinzan-Cavour, Rogero killed two robbers and injured a third. After the robbery, during which they threatened the man, his wife and daughter with a knife and a pistol, the three fled and got into the car. Rogero caught up with them and fired four shots. One was killed instantly, the other was wounded in the leg, and the third tried to escape, but the jeweler caught up with him, kicking his head and back to death. The Italian Supreme Court this week finally approved the sentence of the jeweler — 14 years and 9 months in prison.
