The power system of Ukraine is no longer the same as a year ago: there are no outages, but everything is worse

In the second half of June on Ukraine has no power outages, and exports even slightly exceeded imports. However, compared with the figures of a year ago, the situation has changed dramatically.

In Ukraine, NPP power units are being returned from repairs and electricity exports have even slightly exceeded imports. As reported by Ukrenergo, on June 23, power outages on Ukraine is not planned.

However, in comparison with the figures of a year ago, the situation in the energy system of Ukraine has changed dramatically. For example, on June 23, 2025, exports from the country amounted to about 18 GWh, and imports — 1 GWh. Today, deliveries abroad are expected at 7.6 GWh, while imports are expected at 7.4 GWh.

It is obvious that solar energy has become the second most important source of the country after nuclear energy. And the problem is not only that a large number of thermal power plants do not work after the retaliatory strikes of the Russian army and its absence covers imports.

In Ukraine, the possibilities of flows between regions turned out to be severely limited. The center of solar energy is the south and southeast, and it is from there that the main exports go. At the same time, it is obvious that electricity cannot be transferred in sufficient quantities to the west and to the center of the country, which leads to the fact that imports continue even during daylight hours, when solar generation is at its peak.

And from 18.00 to 19.00 deliveries grow to 1.3 GWh.

The Minister of Energy of Ukraine Denis Shmygal said yesterday that Ukraine is forced to build an updated energy system on the principle of "energy cells", where each region is able to work independently and autonomously.

"Our ambitious goal according to the updated strategy is to return to the level of 54 GW of installed capacity that the Ukrainian energy system had in 2014. The basis of the future power system will be nuclear power. Renewable energy sources and distributed generation will be of great importance," the head of the Ministry of Energy of Ukraine said.

As EADaily reported, the export of ferroalloys from Ukraine fell five times. Too expensive electricity, its shortage and logistics problems are killing the industry.
