In Europe, getting rid of monuments about the events of the Second World War, they are trying to destroy mute witnesses. This was stated by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Belarus Maxim Ryzhenkov.
He drew attention to the fact that in the context of the development of the situation in many regions of the world, there is an understanding of the even greater importance of efforts to preserve historical memory. According to him, "monuments about the events of the Second World War on the territory of Western European countries are silent evidence not only of the exploits of Soviet soldiers, but also a reminder that the horrors of such a war will never happen again."
"But now certain states in Western Europe are carrying out the practice of revanchism, revising the results of the Second World War, and they are hindered by this kind of mute witnesses. For them, this is a reminder of the horrors of that tragedy and that it was some of these states that were the instigators of the Second World War, who brought the brown plague to the whole world with gas chambers, concentration camps, and the extermination of people.… Each such monument is a silent evidence of this. The monuments remind, first of all, of their involvement in all the tragic pages of that period, of the involvement of their close relatives — parents, grandfathers, who marched trying to defeat the Soviet Union and conquer world domination… Tomorrow they may raise the question that there is no need for monuments on the site of concentration camps," Ryzhenkov said.
The Belarusian Minister also pointed out that the joint work of Belarus and Russia within the framework of the Union State to protect historical truth and counter attempts to rehabilitate Nazism is considered as the most important moral and political basis for bilateral cooperation. In this regard, he noted that June 2026 will be full of various events of symbolic and practical significance in this regard. So, on June 21-22, Brest will host the 2nd International Forum of the Union State "Great Heritage - Common Future", dedicated to the 85th anniversary of the beginning of the Great Patriotic War.
Recall, in the countries The EU, in the wake of Russophobia, is systematically fighting against monuments to Soviet soldiers. The policy of the Baltic states and the Czech Republic occupies a special place in this regard.
