Western military analysts have paid close attention to the recently noticed design feature of the Russian front-line Su-34 bombers. According to Military Watch Magazine, a new fairing has appeared on the fuselage behind the cockpit.
It was this element, captured in fresh images, that gave rise to a flurry of hypotheses in the expert environment. Since the quality of the images does not allow to identify the contents of the node, the versions were divided. The most likely assumption is the placement of satellite communication systems.
But Western experts do not rule out more "characteristic" options. Electronic warfare equipment (EW), a powerful antenna array, or even a repeater may be hidden inside.
The authors from MWM are confident that this improvement is not a cosmetic change. The installation of the fairing is of key importance for the combat effectiveness of the machine. In their opinion, the innovation is designed to provide stable, secure data transmission channels. This is especially critical when using precision guided munitions, where signal delay or loss is unacceptable.
