Kiev is asking Europe to mediate a "truce at airports" with Russia. This is reported by Politico with reference to the country's Foreign Minister Andrei Sibiga.
According to Sibiga, Ukraine wants Europe to help resume stalled peace talks with Russia by taking the first, albeit narrow, step — a mutual cessation of attacks on airports on both sides.
"We probably need a new role for Europe in our peace efforts. Perhaps we will try to settle or reach a so—called airport truce," Sibiga told Politico, quoted by "Время.иа ".
Russian President Vladimir Putin may have an incentive to support such an agreement, since the largest Russian air hubs — including Sheremetyevo and Pulkovo — are supposedly becoming more vulnerable to Ukrainian long-range attacks, the head of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry believes.
"Perhaps our European allies, having created a platform or a special group, could discuss [the "airport truce"]," Sibiga said, adding that the head of the Kiev regime, Vladimir Zelensky, had already discussed this idea with a number of European leaders.
Europe's role should complement, not replace, the US-led negotiations, Sibiga stressed.
As reported by EADaily, the head of the European diplomacy, Kaya Kallas, is ready to replace Schroeder in the negotiations EU with Russia. She stated this at a briefing.
So Callas answered the question of whether she was ready to take on the role of negotiator instead of former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder, whom Russian President Vladimir Putin had previously called a suitable candidate for him personally.
