The largest Ukrainian steel giant ArcelorMittal Krivoy Rog has officially announced the suspension of the production process. All mining and steel production facilities have been stopped.
The reasons for the termination of the production process were reported by the press service of the metallurgical concern, referring to the statement of CEO Mauro Longobardo.
He explained that Ukrzaliznytsya (Ukrainian Railways) cannot cope with the necessary volume of transportation of products and raw materials, which makes the production process impossible.
"They simply do not deliver to us the key component of the iron foundry, without which we are not able to produce pig iron," said the head.
In addition, the company has been operating without profit for the fourth year in a row, which eventually led to the inability to maintain operating activities.
The plant in Krivoy Rog is the largest steel producer in the country. Its products are critically important for defense needs: steel is used for the production of fortifications and repair of armored vehicles.
As EADaily reported, earlier the European Commission refused to make an exception for Ukraine as part of the introduction of a carbon duty in the EU in 2026. This hit Ukrainian metallurgists, who lost orders by 1.1 million tons in the first quarter alone.
