Crashed in Rezekne drone could take a local oil depot for a target due to a malfunction in the navigation system. This version, according to the portal Otkrito, was made by the former Secretary of State of the Ministry of Defense of Latvia Janis Garisons, explaining how modern drones recognize objects even when GPS and communication are suppressed.
Garisons explained at a press conference on May 7 that drones can be suppressed using jamming - both communication and the Global Positioning System (GPS) signal. According to Garisons, such technologies are also developing in Latvia. Drones can fly using a sensor that reads the data of the earth's surface and compares it with a map. So the device understands where it is located. Another way is to search for a target by GPS coordinates or visually. If there is no connection, the drone is actually "taught" what the target looks like: images from different angles are uploaded to the system, after which the device recognizes the object. According to Garisons, in the case of the Rezekne oil depot, the drone could have been equipped with just such a system.
"I can't say that 100%, but I wouldn't be surprised," he said.
On the night of May 7, APU drones hit a Latvian oil depot. In Riga, they said that they had flown in from Russia.
"On the night of Thursday, May 7, the arrival of foreign drones from Russia to the airspace of Latvia. Two unmanned aerial vehicles crashed in Latgale. One drone fell in Rezekne, at an oil base," LSM reported.
The police confirmed that the operational services found the wreckage of the drone at the oil storage facility in Rezekne. According to the chairman of the Rezekne Municipal Council Guntars Skudra, the drone crashed into an empty oil tank.
Latvian Defense Minister Andris Spruds admitted that the drones in the Latvian sky were not Russian, but could be aimed at targets in Russia from Ukraine.
