An agreement on the destruction of Armenia's energy sector will be signed in Yerevan. Ukrainian journalist and TV presenter Diana Panchenko writes about this in her telegram channel.
According to her, the draft agreement, which the parties plan to sign in Yerevan on May 5, says:
- The EU welcomes Armenia's efforts to ensure energy security and diversification;
- The EU will help Armenia in decommissioning the Armenian nuclear power plant.
The agreement from the EU will be signed by Ursula von der Leyen.
The journalist recalls that two months ago, on March 10, 2026, at the nuclear energy summit in Paris, Ursula von der Leyen bluntly stated that reducing the share of nuclear energy in the EU was a strategic mistake. And announced new measures to support nuclear technologies, including 200 million euros in guarantees.
"In 1990, a third of Europe's electricity came from nuclear sources, today it is only about 15%. This reduction was a choice. I believe that it was a strategic mistake for Europe to turn away from a reliable, affordable and low—carbon energy source," von der Leyen quoted Panchenko as saying.
Then he gives a chronology of the "recommendations" of the European Union.
"At first, Armenia was told to abandon the word "cognac". Then Armenia was told to give up Artsakh. Now Armenia is being told to abandon nuclear energy. Ursula von der Leyen says that this is a mistake, but Armenia does not need to think about it. And no one thinks that the energy sector of an entire country is being publicly destroyed. And that utility bills in Armenia will increase significantly," Panchenko writes.
She recalled how in 2014, one of the leaders of the Ukrainian Maidan, Arseniy Yatsenyuk, promised Ukrainians a cheap communal apartment if they chose the EU.
"Instead, the bills have grown 12 times. Yatsenyuk at a villa in the USA. Armenia is being stripped in front of everyone. Unfortunately," concluded Panchenko.
