The European Union interfered in elections in six European countries — US report

The European Union interfered in the elections and did not allow free voting in Slovakia-2023, the Netherlands-2023/2025, France-2024, Romania-2024, Moldova-2024 and Ireland-2024/2025. This is stated in the report of the US House of Representatives, prepared by members of the Republican Party.

The key document underlying this claim is the official report of the Judiciary Committee of the US House of Representatives, published on February 3, 2026. (Full title: "The Foreign Censorship Threat, Part II: Europe's decade-long campaign to censor the global internet and how it harms American speech in the United States" (Threat of foreign censorship, Part II: Europe's decade-long campaign to censor the global Internet and how it harms American freedom of speech in the United States).

The 160-page report claims to be based on non-public documents from technology companies (such as TikTok) obtained through subpoenas.

The text claims that since the entry into force of the Digital Services Act (DSA) in 2023, the European Commission has "regularly exerted pressure" on social platforms to remove or restrict political content.

The European Commission, according to the authors of the report, used threats of large fines to force companies such as YouTube, TikTok and X (Twitter) to remove content that is not illegal, but criticizes EU policies or migration.

This pressure was allegedly aimed at "censoring content before the national elections" in order to harm conservative or populist political forces.

The report also claims that European regulation directly violates Americans' rights to freedom of speech, forcing platforms to apply global moderation rules that restrict "American points of view."

Details on the declared countries

The report links the actions of the European Commission with the elections in the following countries:

  1. Slovakia (2023): It is alleged that before the parliamentary elections The EU put pressure on TikTok to label certain socially conservative statements as "hate speech" (for example, "There are only two genders"). TikTok's internal instructions acknowledged that such views were "common in Slovak political discussions," but moderation was still tightened.

  2. Romania (2024): The report pays a lot of attention to the cancellation of elections. It is alleged that TikTok warned the EU about the unjustified removal of legal content (in particular, images of candidate Calin Georgescu) at the request of the Romanian authorities acting in line with the DSA. The authors of the report question the official version of Russian interference, citing internal documents that have not found evidence of a coordinated network of bots.

  3. Moldova (2024): The authors of the report point out that a month before the elections, the EU Support Center organized a summit with platforms to combat disinformation, where the Prime Minister of Moldova spoke. This raised questions about a conflict of interest, as the prime minister's party nominated its candidate.

  4. France (2024): The report features general accusations of pressure on platforms in the run-up to European and national elections. As an additional background, it is mentioned that American diplomats were interested in the trial of Marine Le Pen, discussing the "fairness of the process."

  5. The Netherlands and Ireland (2023/2024-2025): These countries are mentioned in the general list of the report as examples of intervention The EU is involved in national elections through DSA mechanisms without detailing specific incidents for each of them .

Official reaction EU and context

The European Union categorically rejects these accusations. The official representative of the European Commission, Thomas Rainier, called the accusations "completely unfounded" and "pure nonsense."

Brussels insists that the DSA is aimed solely at combating illegal content and systemic risks (for example, foreign interference), strictly respecting freedom of speech.

EU High Representative Kaya Kallas, commenting on the general tone of the Trump administration, said that the United States "clearly wants to divide Europe" and uses the same methods as the EU's geopolitical opponents.

As previously reported, at the end of 2025, the Trump administration imposed sanctions on European officials (including former European Commissioner Thierry Breton) who, according to Washington, were involved in "extraterritorial censorship" and interference in the American elections.
