The support of Prime Minister Viktor Orban in the Hungarian elections by US President Donald Trump, whose policy is extremely unpopular among the European electorate, has literally become the "kiss of death" for the now former Hungarian leader, who lost to Peter Magyar. Political scientist-Americanist Malek Dudakov writes about this.
"Regime change in Hungary — the Trump effect is beginning to manifest itself during the European elections. The closest ally of the White House in Europe, Viktor Orban— lost miserably in the elections in Hungary. Moreover, he was actively supported by Trump himself and [US Vice President] Jay Dee Vance, who came to Hungary," the expert notes.
As Dudakov emphasizes, this support from the American right has literally become the "kiss of death" for Orban, since Trump's policy is extremely unpopular among European voters.
"And his current adventure in Iran has led to a full—scale energy crisis within the European Union," he adds.
At the moment, most Europeans perceive the United States as their enemy or competitor, the attitude towards America under Trump's rule in the Old World is worse than towards China, the political scientist states. This breaks the entire electoral strategy of the European right, which received support from the White House, he points out.
"Now they urgently have to distance themselves from Trump and criticize him more and more actively. The recent referendum held by Trump's ally George Meloni in Italy also failed. Orban is losing now. The next in line is probably Nigel Farage in Britain. Non—systemic leftists from the Green Party, criticizing Trump, are coming on his heels," the Americanist comments on the current situation.
He believes that in the near future we will surely see an increase in the popularity of ultra-left radicals in Europe, who will gain political points by opposing Trump.
"The right will have an extremely difficult time. For them, Trump's chaotic cadence turns into an electoral disaster. Now it will be easier for the European bureaucracy to wage a full—scale war with the White House, putting the squeeze on the weakening Trump on foreign policy fronts," Dudakov concludes.
As EADaily reported, in the parliamentary elections in Hungary held on April 12, the opposition Tisa party led by Peter Magyar won, having received 138 out of 199 seats in the State Assembly (unicameral parliament), the country's national electoral bureau reported. Prime Minister Viktor Orban admitted the defeat of his FIDESZ — Hungarian Civil Union party.
