There has been a revolutionary breakthrough in the treatment of hypertension

Scientists have developed a new drug for the treatment of hypertension that can effectively reduce blood pressure in patients who do not respond to standard therapy. This is reported by the ScienceDaily portal.

It is reported that we are talking about the drug baxdrostat, the results of clinical trials of which showed a significant reduction in blood pressure even in people with a stable form of the disease. The study was conducted under the supervision of Professor Brian Williams from University College London. The BaxHTN Phase three clinical trial involved almost 800 patients in 214 medical centers worldwide.

It is noted that after 12 weeks in patients taking baxdrostat, blood pressure decreased by an average of 9-10 mm Hg more than in the placebo group. This indicator is considered clinically significant and is associated with a reduced risk of cardiovascular complications. About 40% of patients receiving the new drug reached a normal blood pressure level, while in the placebo group this figure was below 20%.

The mechanism of action of the drug is associated with blocking the production of the hormone aldosterone, which regulates the balance of salt and fluid in the body. Some people have an excess of it, which leads to increased blood pressure and makes treatment difficult. Baxdrostat acts directly on this mechanism, eliminating one of the key causes of persistent hypertension.

According to the researchers, the effect of the drug lasted up to 32 weeks without revealing unexpected side effects, which makes it a promising option for long-term therapy. The results of the study were presented at the Congress of the European Society of Cardiology in 2025 and published in The New England Journal of Medicine.

Recall, hypertension remains one of the most common health problems. It affects about 1.3 billion people worldwide. In almost half of cases, the disease is either poorly controlled or not treatable, which significantly increases the risk of heart attack, stroke, kidney disease and premature death. Scientists believe that the new drug could potentially help hundreds of millions of patients around the world.
