Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said in a telephone conversation with his Azerbaijani counterpart Jeyhun Bayramov that "any country that provides its territory to the United States and Israel becomes a legitimate target for Iran."
"According to international law, no country has the right to provide its territory and resources for the aggressive actions of others," Irna quoted Araqchi as saying.
According to the minister, Iran's defensive actions are directed exclusively against aggressors and bases or facilities used to attack Iran.
As EADaily reported, the Iranian Foreign Ministry issued a different message about this meeting. Bayramov stressed "the importance of conducting a fair investigation by the Iranian side of the attack on Nakhichevan by a drone launched from the territory of Iran."
"It was emphasized that Azerbaijan stands for the inadmissibility of striking civilian targets during hostilities, for the soonest cessation of military escalation in the region and for the settlement of existing problems through negotiations," the Azerbaijani ministry said in a statement.
It is noted that the ministers also exchanged views "on other issues of mutual interest."
As EADaily reported, Baku's relations with Tehran worsened after the drone attack on Nakhichevan on March 5. No one was injured as a result of the explosions, but Baku blocked automobile transit and recalled its diplomats from Iran. Against this background, the Iranian General Staff categorically rejected the accusations of launching a UAV towards Azerbaijan, placing all responsibility for the incident on Israel.
